Read stone as a changed surface
Tooling, polish, pigment, breakage, salts and restoration all contribute to the surface visible in a museum.

A material note becomes reliable when the complete object, exact museum vocabulary, visible condition and technical evidence remain in separate but connected fields.
Begin with the museum term
Copy the material exactly as the institution identifies it. Limestone, sandstone, granite, quartzite and other stones are not interchangeable visual categories, and gallery lighting can mislead color recognition. If the label says only stone, preserve that level of precision. A visitor photograph is not a petrographic analysis and should never silently upgrade a broad label into a specific geological identification.
Separate form from surface
Describe overall shape, carved depth and profile before focusing on color or sheen. A smooth face beside a rough break may reflect original finishing, burial history, damage, reuse or modern treatment. Sight can record the contrast; it cannot establish its cause. Link any manufacturing or conservation explanation to the exact object number and a responsible technical source.
Map worked and broken zones
Trace where carving, drilled recesses, incised lines and unfinished areas meet losses or modern supports. Use directional language tied to the displayed object rather than a detached crop. A broken edge may reveal internal texture, but it does not automatically show the ancient quarry face or a complete carving sequence. Record what is inaccessible behind mounts and barriers.
Treat polish as a question
Gloss can concentrate on projecting areas, protected recesses or restored fills. Note whether the highlight moves when you change position within permitted circulation. Do not call a bright patch ancient polish, handling wear or coating without documentation. Compare an official object photograph, conservation record and your dated gallery view as separate sources with different lighting and purposes.
Keep pigment provisional
Small traces of red, blue, yellow, black or white may survive unevenly, appear under later deposits or be affected by warm lamps. Name visible color as an observation and use institutional analysis for pigment identification. Digital saturation cannot reconstruct an original scheme. Retain a whole-object view so a magnified colored patch does not imply coverage unsupported by the surviving surface.
Include scale and distance
Monumental stone seen from a landing and a small fragment seen through glass invite different claims. Copy dimensions and note viewing distance, plinth height and inaccessible sides. A close crop can erase mass while a distant view can hide working marks. Pair the two views and state which one supports each part of your description.
Read inscriptions as occupied surfaces
Carved text follows flat, curved, broken or reused zones and changes under raking light. Map the text field before quoting a translation. Use the museum’s reading or a cited publication, preserving brackets and uncertainties. Do not translate an isolated sign from a visitor image or assume every inscription belongs to the object’s first phase of use.
Distinguish ancient and modern joins
Large stone objects may combine ancient fragments with modern fills, pins, bases or reconstructed outlines. Describe visible boundaries without diagnosing them. A neat seam is not automatically modern and a rough one is not automatically ancient. Conservation documentation, installation records or clearly keyed diagrams are necessary before assigning date, material or purpose to a join.
Compare stone under control
Choose a second object identified as the same stone or sharing period, type or provenance. Compare one feature at a time: grain appearance, carving depth, finish or damage. Keep differences in scale, lighting and treatment explicit. Two gallery objects can sharpen a question, but they cannot establish a quarry source, workshop practice or chronological rule by themselves.
Write the surface record
Combine institution, inventory number, material term, dimensions, visible working, color, damage, supports and viewing limit. Keep observation separate from the museum’s interpretation and later technical research. End with one unresolved question. A stone record should make the surviving surface more accountable, not turn visual confidence into geological, conservation or historical certainty.
Never touch, illuminate, scrape, use magnets or cross barriers. Gallery observation describes appearance; material testing belongs to responsible institutions and specialists.
