Metal colour is not composition

Corrosion, coatings, joins, inlays and gallery light complicate every quick identification of bronze, copper, gold or silver.

A material note becomes reliable when the complete object, exact museum vocabulary, visible condition and technical evidence remain in separate but connected fields.

Copy composition from the label

Use bronze, copper alloy, gold, silver, electrum, iron or metal only where the institution supports that wording. Present color is unreliable because corrosion, tarnish, burial deposits, coatings and light alter appearance. A green surface does not independently prove bronze, and a yellow highlight does not certify gold. Analytical composition belongs to technical records, not visual intuition.

Separate core and surface

A metal object may combine substrate, corrosion products, gilding, inlay, coating and modern fill. Begin with visible layers and boundaries rather than a single color name. State which layer the museum identifies. Do not scrape, touch, use a magnet or change lighting. Visitor observation can map a question but must not imitate materials testing.

Read casting and working modestly

Seams, thin edges, hammered texture, chased lines and repaired openings may relate to manufacture or later history. Describe them precisely and compare technical diagrams where published. A line that resembles a casting seam can be a join, crack, applied element or reflection. Manufacturing sequence requires evidence beyond one visible surface and one camera angle.

Map attachments

Crowns, eyes, handles, blades, tangs and decorative elements can use mechanical joins, soldering or separate mounts. Record sockets, overlap and color changes without naming the joining method unless documented. Modern supports may resemble structural elements. Pair the whole object, detail view and installation context so a cropped attachment does not float free of its current display.

Treat corrosion as history, not decoration

Green, blue, red, brown or black areas may preserve complex interactions among alloy, environment and treatment. Avoid ranking them as beautiful patina or damaging corrosion without institutional language. Note distribution and texture, then consult conservation analysis. Present stability cannot be judged from a dated photograph, and visitors should never report an emergency from color alone.

Account for reflective glare

Specular highlights erase inscription strokes, exaggerate dents and shift with viewpoint. Write a naked-eye note before photographing, then compare the processed image. If permitted, move laterally rather than adding light. Retain one wider view showing the case and illumination. A dramatic reflection may communicate display atmosphere but rarely supports a precise surface or composition claim.

Keep weapons and tools contextual

A blade, axe, mirror, vessel or fitting is more than its alloy. Copy object type, date, provenance, dimensions and documented use from the label. Avoid reconstructing handling, performance or social status from shape alone. A display category may group objects for comparison even when their archaeological contexts, functions and periods differ.

Check repairs and restoration

Metal objects can contain ancient patches, modern joins, fills, reinforcements or replaced elements. Visible color contrast may suggest a boundary but does not date it. Use conservation reports and keyed images where available. State which part is direct observation and which part is published interpretation, especially when a clean silhouette makes restoration hard to recognize.

Compare alloys only through evidence

Two objects of similar color can have different compositions, and two parts of one object can use different alloys. Compare museum material fields, analytical results and manufacturing features rather than hue. If only one object has technical analysis, do not transfer its recipe to the neighbour. Use the comparison to define a question, not invent a shared workshop.

Write a metal evidence chain

List institutional material term, object number, scale, present color, surface layers, joins, inlays, supports and optical limits. Add analytical composition only with a named source and method. End by stating which part remains visually ambiguous. This chain prevents metal’s reflectivity and familiar color categories from creating certainty the museum record does not provide.

NO VISITOR TESTING

Never touch, illuminate, scrape, use magnets or cross barriers. Gallery observation describes appearance; material testing belongs to responsible institutions and specialists.
